Inclusion and diversity: preventing discrimination in sport

The final conference of the European Sentry project, coordinated by Uisp, took place in Saint Denis, France. D. Conti and T. Pesce speak

The Sentry Sport project comes to an end after almost three years of work which involved Uisp as coordinator of a group of valid partners: EFUS European Network, ISCA International Network, VIDC Austria, Red Deporte Y Cooperacion Spain, Koinsep En Drasei Greece.

The project, financed by the Eramus+ Sport program of the European Commission, achieved the main objective of validating a methodology aimed at monitoring, understanding and analyzing the phenomenon of discrimination in the field of sport, which often leads victims to abandon sport activity.

Many materials and activities have been created during these years: two methodological guides, a collection of good practices, an online training course for sports educators, an awareness video, a list of political and organizational recommendations for those organizations and local authorities that intend work in the field of prevention and fight against all forms of discrimination in sport. All materials can be consulted at this link.

To conclude the project and present its results, a final conference was organized on 19 September in Saint Denis (France) which will be one of the venues for the next 2024 Olympics and Paralympics. The meeting took place at the Town Hall and was attended by Oriane Filhol, delegate of the Saint Denis syndicate and councilor for Solidarity, Social Policies, women's rights and the fight against discrimination, together with the Uisp president Tiziano Pesce, who welcomed the participants underlining the importance of the joint and transversal work carried out by both government institutions and sports organizations in the field of anti-discrimination.

"The conference - said Daniela Conti, head of Uisp Multiculturality and Cooperation Policies, as well as coordinator of the project - was an opportunity not only to take stock of the work carried out and present the materials, but to listen to the voices of the participants, understand the needs and think about future prospects".

In fact, the conference was attended by 70 sports educators, cultural mediators, policy makers representing grassroots sport organizations, NGOs, national and international sports organizations, national and European institutions from seven European countries. The conference had moments in plenary with the intervention of speakers who gave important ideas for subsequent group work. In fact, at the end of each plenary all the people were divided into discussion groups mixed by skills and roles, which had the role of discussing needs, good practices, ideas and give suggestions for the future.

The first work session concerned political opportunities and recommendations: moderated by Marta Pellon Brussosa of Efus, it saw the participation of Uisp president Tiziano Pesce, Mogens Kirkeby, ISCA president and Catherine Moyon de Baecque, president of the Commission for sexual violence and discrimination in the sport of CNOS, the French Olympic Committee.

The second working session focused on the challenge of how to understand discrimination in sport. Participating were Mattia Peradotto, director of UNAR and Agnese Canevari, exective at UNAR, Gabriela Matei, head of the Council of Europe project to combat hate speech in sport, Michael Schmied, of VIDC, coordinated by Kurt Wachter, president of the Sport Inclusion-SPIN network.

The third session, perhaps the one that most emotionally impressed the participants, was the one dedicated to testimonies. Hilal Erkoca of ISCA invited the speakers to talk about their experiences of discrimination and how they are now engaged on the front line to fight it and raise awareness in the sporting world. Speakers included: Alpha Camara, coach of the Parisian association Championnet Sports, Omar Daffe, responsible for anti-racist activities of the Italian football major league (Serie A) and Valentina Petrillo, transgender and Paralympic athlete.

During his conclusions, Tiziano Pesce, collecting the ideas that emerged during the working day, once again underlined the importance of networking and training: "We cannot fight discrimination in sport without joint work where sports organizations, but also institutions at all levels are at the forefront. To do this, our sports educators need to be trained and informed, we must never let our guard down. As our guests pointed out to us with their testimonies, the hardest part, when you suffer discrimination, is being left alone, this must never happen again". (Daniela Conti)
